Upstream
Going north in the mountains

This time I visited Gifu Prefecture. Mountains occupy about 80% of the prefecture, and the spring water from the mountains becomes large rivers such as the Ibi River, Nagara River, and Kiso River before flowing through the city.

These are called Kiso Mikawa, and have been indispensable for life since ancient times alongside people's lives.

Going fast from Nobi Plain with the sun in the background, you gradually enter the mountainous area with many tunnels and drive for 1 hour from Gifu city. Arrived at Gujo Hachiman.

Water town
Gujo Hachiman

This town called Gujo Hachiman, called the town of water, has old townscapes north and south across the Yoshida River, which is a tributary of the Nagara River. The clear waterways that flow around here and there are tourist attractions including Sohsui, which is one of the 100 famous waters.

If you go a little upstream from the center of the city, you can see advanced fishing people aiming for chars and eels from spring to summer. Even on this day, the angler's figure could be seen from the car crossing the bridge. The morning mist in the mountains cleared up in the sun and the angler in the light felt divine.

Connecting tradition
Thoughts on craftmanship

As we walked through the streets of the town, we arrived at Gujo Mokuri, where the casual-designed thong geta were lined up at the store. Gujo Hachiman is famous for the summer Gujo dance that dances all night, and it is said that the geta, which is indispensable for Gujo dance, is the most consumed in Japan.

When Mr. Morohashi, the owner and geta craftsman, moved to this city knowing that there was no craftsman in Gujo to succeed this geta craftsmanship, and he decided to continue to make this traditional craft dance geta using his own woodworking technique. This time, we had a chance to see Mr. Morohashi's work at his workshop,

It was felt that the high quality of the clogs, which uses locally produced cypresses and makes use of the characteristics of the trees to identify the grain of each tree, tells Mr. Morohashi his commitment to manufacturing. During the all-night dance in August, you can see 300 pairs of clogs a day at the store, which shows the success of Gujo dance.

At the dumpling teahouse
A small break

When I thought that I was hungry after taking a walk in the city, I saw the grilling dumplings and decided to take a break at one dumpling teahouse. Inside the old folk house has been converted into a store, and a soft light shines from the courtyard, creating a very cozy space.

Mitarashi dumplings are baked fragrantly after the order is placed. It has elasticity and you can feel the original sweetness of rice as if you chew it. I would like you to sprinkle some Kinako on the second piece. I rediscovered that the they were just so delicious that the richness and flavor spread in the mouth.

Know the freshwater fish in the world

Exit Gujo and pass through Gifu city to Aqua Toto Gifu in Kakamigahara city. This 4-story aquarium reproduces the source of the Nagara River from the estuary with fish. There is no doubt that people who have been fishing will get more tension simply because they can observe the species of fish that they can not easily see, not being treated as only freshwater fish.

There are many faithful exhibits of the places where each fish lives from upstream to downstream, and we often find out again. There was also a scene in which a father who was excited by the fish he saw for the first time told his children that this fish was everywhere when his father was a child. You can also visit the PA from the highway, so if you like fish, please stop by.

The river flowing through the city
I took a peek

When I drive in Gifu city, I often cross the bridge. I saw an elderly angler in a river with clear water and a relatively good foothold, so I decided to park in a nearby parking lot and take a look. When you get off the embankment and look into the river, the size of Oikawa is not big, but a large group of Oikawa is moving right and left. I tried to pull the rod out of my bag where it wouldn't interfere with my seniors.

The food passes by in front of Oikawa. There is a horde right there, but I can't fish at all. When I changed my mind and matched the length of the bottom of the broom with the bottom of the river, I found a hit and I found a brown goby-like fish. The size is small, but the area is clear, and when I looked into it, I found out that it was a species of gokurakuhaze.

Gifu Soul Food

The sun also leaned, and reminding me that I wanted to eat Gifu's soul food "chicken" I saw on TV a while ago, so I found a shop called Tanaka Seisakusho, a restaurant specializing in chicken meat, and entered. The menu includes miso, soy sauce, and spicy food. This time I ordered chicken-chan miso.

A heap of cabbage and chicken piles covered with chicken's miso in a Genghis Khan pot is set on the stove in front of you and lit. After about 5 minutes, there was a sizzling sound, and when the staff mixed the ingredients on the iron pan so that the heat would be evenly cooked, the smell was even better.

The hot chicken that can be ordered from two people, the spicy sauce and the juicy chicken match, and the cabbage that was a heap was flattened in no time. Not only chickens but also local dishes like this should be connected even if generations change in the area. At the same time, I felt that I would like to continue to connect with the traditional fishing culture and the environment for catching fish.
